District profile: Cape Breton North is an urban riding, taking in the former towns of North Sydney and Sydney Mines.

The main industries are fishing, tourism and the service sector. Until 2001, this riding was home to the island's last underground coal mine.

Political history

For much of the 1990s, the Liberals held this seat. After Premier Russell MacLellan resigned, however, the riding went to Progressive Conservative Cecil Clarke in a March 2001 byelection.

Clarke has been re-elected twice since then. A shining light for the Tories in Cape Breton throughout the decade, he has served as Speaker of the House of Assembly and is currently the attorney general and justice minister.
