District profile: The district was carved out from areas of both Lunenburg and Halifax counties in the 1993 redistribution.

In Lunenburg, it includes the Municipality of Chester, the home of sailors during Chester Race Week and a favourite summer place for the wealthy. Oak Island Resort and Ross Farm in New Ross are other tourism draws.

The village of Peggy's Cove – Nova Scotia's No. 1 tourist attraction – and the rugged coastal hamlets of Indian Harbour and Seabright also form part of this district.

There are also many Halifax commuters living in subdivisions clustered in and around St. Margaret's Bay.

Political history

The seat has remained Tory blue over the past decade after electing a Liberal in 1993. The margins of victory increased for the PCs since a narrow 39-vote win in 2003.

That's not to say this district has been without intrigue. In 1998, the Progressive Conservative MLA Hinrich Bitter-Suermann left the party to sit as an Independent. Running the next time around as a member of the NDP, Bitter-Suermann lost by less than 40 votes.
