Political history

Former Conservative premier John Buchanan was a mainstay in this district from 1967 to 1990.

After Buchanan left politics, the New Democrats stepped in. Robert Chisholm, who later became NDP leader, won a byelection in 1991 and the party has held the riding ever since.

Michele Raymond won re-election here the last time around, reaffirming the NDP's strength by taking almost 50 per cent of the vote.

The Liberals have been confined to third-place finishes in recent years.
