District profile: The district takes in the downtown core of Halifax, as well as Point Pleasant Park.

It's also home to a number of post-secondary institutions (St. Mary's, Dalhousie, King's, Technical University of Nova Scotia and the Atlantic School of Theology) and four hospitals as well as the Public Gardens and businesses along Spring Garden Road.

The district includes wealthy homeowners, urban professionals, students and a handful of voters on Sable Island, 250 kilometres offshore.

Political history

All three parties have staked a claim here over the past couple of decades and there have been a number of tight races.

The NDP claimed the seat in a 2006 race that had no incumbent. Liberal Danny Graham had resigned from office a year earlier to spend time with his wife, who later died from cancer.

The PCs have also had electoral success here, although not since 1999.
