District profile: Pictou East is a largely rural riding that includes Thorburn, Sutherland's River and Merigomish. The town of Westville was added after the 1999 provincial election.

The Boat Harbour and Merigomish reserves are part of this riding.

Most people are employed by the service sector or work at one of the two regional high schools. Forestry, lobster fishing along the Northumberland Strait and agriculture are still important, although less so than they once were.

2006:	New Democrat Clarrie MacKinnon defeated PC contender Sue Uhren by 107 votes. Danny Walsh of the Liberals was a close third, taking 26.6 per cent of the vote.
2003:	PC Jim DeWolfe took 44 per cent of the vote to defeat Liberal John Fraser by 1,056 votes. New Democrat Bob Matheson came in third.
1999:	DeWolfe defeated Andy Thompson of the NDP by 2,100 votes and Liberal Lynn MacDonald by nearly 3,000 votes.
1998:	DeWolfe defeated New Democrat David MacKenzie by 1,500 votes and Liberal Wayne Fraser by 1,600 votes.
1993:	Fraser won the seat for the Liberals in a byelection, defeating PC Mel MacLean by 2,400 votes. Dave Peters of the NDP was third.
1993:	PC Cameron defeated Fraser by 700 votes. Cameron, who was then the premier, left politics after his government was defeated by the Liberals.
