Current MLA: Sterling Belliveau (NDP)

District profile: Shelburne is a largely rural county where lobster fishing and fish processing remain the main economic activities. Tourism and manufacturing are also important.

The district includes the communities of Sherburne – the largest municipality – Clark's Harbour and Lockeport.

The area's heritage is Loyalist, and neighbouring smaller communities include descendants from early black Loyalists.

2006 results

Political history

The name Huskilson was synonymous with Sherburne politics for almost 30 years. The family still owns funeral homes in the area.

Harold Huskilson, an undertaker by trade, represented the district from 1970 to 1993 as a Liberal. His son, Clifford, became the MLA that year and was re-elected in 1998.

But 1999 brought a changing of the guard. A recount following that election produced a tie between Clifford Huskilson and PC challenger Cecil O'Donnell. O'Donnell's name was drawn out of a hat to break the Liberal hold on the district.

Then, in 2006, another shift: Sterling Belliveau brought the district over to the NDP side.
