CBC Radio 2 in Edmonton
There is a shortlist of musicians who have risen to international acclaim and who are truly worthy of the status of ICON. Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot and Ian Tyson certainly top that list.
Ian Tyson's music has been recorded and performed by his contemporaries, Nashville superstars and the new generation of upstarts. People as diverse as Steve Earl and Warren Zevon have considered themselves fans.
At the age of 75 he shows no signs of slowing his musical activity. He has just released a brand new CD and has tour dates around North America. It was a distinct pleasure for CBC to record his concert at the very intimate Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove, Alberta.
Bi-annually Tyson hosts five SOLD OUT nights at this small town venue performing for the people who know his music best.

concert 1: Loudon Wainwright / Danny Michel / Jill Barber / Fred Eaglesmith
recorded at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival
It was a spanning of the generations that made this session stage at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival work so well. Danny Michel in awe of Loudon Wainwright. Jill Barber the fresh faced new-comer. Fred Eaglesmith the consummate wildcard. Add some friends along for the ride and it was the definition of what a session stage is all about: discovery and collaboration.
concert 2: Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir
recorded at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival
This kind of music is rarely heard anymore. It is true, gritty down-to-earth Delta blues at its origin. The Agnostics are true musicologists - they know the music they play, and they play just for the love of it. It all comes alive when it hits the stage. At the Edmonton Folk Music Festival the blend of postmodern lyricism and old world charm sat well with the crowd.
