View these results in the interactive map »This southern Ontario riding contains Brant County and part of Haldimand County, including the city of Brantford. The riding also takes in the Six Nations Indian Reserve No. 40 and the New Credit Indian Reserve No. 40A. It is about 40 kilometres west of Hamilton.
The economy is sustained mainly by manufacturing. Many light manufacturers and commercial firms have moved into the riding in recent years. According to the 2006 census, farming now occupies less one per cent of the labour force.
The average family income is $78,589 and the unemployment rate is six per cent.
In 2004, the riding of Brant added about 9,500 people, mainly from the Indian reserves in the southeast. The riding of Brant was first established in 1903 and was called Brant or Brantford until the present. The last redistribution was in 1966.
Population: 125,136 (2006 census; an increase of 5.5% since 2001)
Political History
Liberal Lloyd St. Amand is serving his second term in the riding after winning against Conservative candidate Phil McColeman in 2006 by 582 votes. In the 2004 election, St. Amand defeated Conservative candidate Greg Martin by 2,663 votes.
Liberal Jane Stewart held the riding from 1993 to 2004 and served under Jean Chr�tien as minister of national revenue, minister of Indian affairs and northern development and minister of human resources. New Democrat Derek Blackburn was MP from a 1971 byelection until 1993.
