View these results in the interactive map »This large riding in southwestern Ontario borders on Lake Huron's western shore. It contains Huron County and part of Bruce County and the communities of Kincardine, Wingham, Goderich and Saugeen Shores, formerly Port Elgin and Southampton.
The large Bruce nuclear power development outside Kincardine is an important economic force in the area. Agriculture is the main industry. Huron County is one of Ontario's main producers of cash crops such as white beans. Bruce County is a beef-producing area.
Many residents commute to the Kitchener-Waterloo and London areas for employment. Tourism is also a significant employer. The 2006 census shows an average family income of $79,839 and an unemployment rate of 4.5 per cent.
The riding of Huron-Bruce was created in the 1976 redistribution from portions of Huron-Middlesex and Bruce ridings. In 2004, the riding boundary was extended farther north to take in part of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.
Population: 104,313 (2006 census; an increase of 0.2% since 2001)
Political History
In 2006, Liberal Paul Steckle slid past Conservative Ben Lobb by 971 votes to win a fifth term in this riding.
In 2004, Steckle's margin of victory was wider, defeating Conservative Barb Fisher by 9,608 votes.
From 1953-88, this riding voted Conservative, sending Robert McKinley to Ottawa from 1965-80 and electing Murray Cardiff for three terms in the 1980s.
