View these results in the interactive map »This Greater Toronto Area riding is in a rapidly growing part of the cities of Mississauga and Brampton.
The riding is bordered by Dixie Road, Highway 401, Eglinton Avenue East and Etobicoke Creek in the east and Mississauga Road, Highway 401 and Terry Fox Way in the west. It stretches from Burnhamthorpe Road East, Central Parkway East and Highway 403 in the south to Steeles Avenue and the northern limit of Mississauga in the north.
According to the 2006 census, 57 per cent of the residents are immigrants and almost 23 per cent give their origin as Indian.
The main employers are manufacturing, retail trade and service sectors, including automotive and aviation technology, and transportation, storage and business services. Average family income is $91,869 and unemployment is 6.4 per cent.
The riding was created in 2004 from 37 per cent of Brampton West-Mississauga, 25 per cent of Mississauga East and 13 per cent of Mississauga Centre.
Population: 136,470 (2006 census; an increase of 19.9% since 2001)
Political History
Liberal Navdeep Bains won in 2006 over Conservative candidate Arnjeet Sangha. Bains received 53 per cent of the vote and is serving his second term in office.
In 2004, Bains won the riding with 57 per cent of the vote and more than twice the number of ballots of his nearest opponent.
Liberal Colleen Beaumier won in Brampton West-Mississauga in 2000 and Liberal Albina Guarnieri won in Mississauga East, both by large margins. Guarnieri, now the MP for Mississauga East-Cooksville, was named minister of state for civil preparedness in 2003 and minister of veterans affairs in 2004.
