In addition to producing unique web-based news content and features, CBC.ca also showcases television and radio programming, creating a comprehensive multimedia experience for our online audience.

Biographies of News Online Staff

The Executive Producer is Mary Sheppard. Mary returned to the CBC in 2003 after an absence to teach journalism at Ryerson University and to write a novel. She had worked at CBC Radio News for more than a decade as a reporter, editor and manager. Mary has an undergraduate degree from St. Francis Xavier University and a master's in journalism from Columbia University.

The Senior Producer is Lisa Khoo. She joined News Online in 2000 after a year in London, England, as a print reporter and author. Before that she worked as a producer for CBC-TV National News for a decade in Washington, London and Toronto. Lisa has a bachelor of arts from the University of Toronto and a master's in journalism from Columbia University.

Doug Kirkaldy is the Senior Editor. He's worked for the CBC for more than 25 years at various locations across the country, including Parliament Hill and the Far North.

Gary Graves is the Projects Producer for News Online, working on any number of special assignments. Prior to joining us, Gary worked for CBC Radio and Television news for 17 years as a producer and executive producer on such programs as The Radio Show, Here & Now, This Morning, Newsworld Today and Benmergui Live.

Tom McFeat is the Producer of the Business zone of CBC News Online. Tom joined CBC in 1979, and has worked as a TV reporter, writer/editor and producer at The National and at several regional CBC stations. Before joining CBC News Online, he produced The Money Show for CBC Newsworld. He is the co-author of two books dealing with online investing and money management.

Our Writers and Producers

Amina Ali writes health and science news for our site. Before joining CBC News Online, Amina worked for CBC Radio's Quirks & Quarks. She has a degree in environmental science and a master's in journalism.

John Boivin started his career covering northern and aboriginal issues in the N.W.T. and northern Manitoba. He has more than 20 years' experience as a print and radio journalist and has also served as a municipal affairs reporter, senior news editor and radio show producer. He joined CBC.ca as its northern regional writer in 2000.

John Bowman graduated from Queen's University with a degree in biology in 1997 and from the University of King's College with a degree in journalism in 2000. After riding the last wave of the dot-com boom at an ill-fated Toronto start-up company, he came to CBC News Online in January 2001.

Barry Brimbecom writes and edits news for toronto.cbc.ca. He has been a senior editor at the Globe and Mail, the National Post, the Winnipeg Free Press, TV Guide and the Thunder Bay Chronicle-Journal.

Ruby Buiza designs and develops our special reports and backgrounders. She also creates graphics and works on program sites. Prior to joining us, Ruby worked for a number of television stations for 10 years. She has a degree in journalism from Ryerson.

Mitch Cormier has been the P.E.I. online journalist for the past five years. He also spent five years working for CBC Radio as a reporter/editor, program host and associate producer. Before joining the CBC, Mitch worked in private radio.

Mark Gollom, news writer, joined CBC News Online in 2003. He's worked as a reporter at the National Post, the Ottawa Citizen and the Toronto Sun. Mark has a degree in political science from the University of Western Ontario and a diploma in journalism from Centennial College in Toronto.

John Gushue covers Newfoundland and Labrador for CBC News Online. He is also a frequent contributor to CBC Radio in Newfoundland and Labrador. John has been a journalist since 1985, in both print and broadcast. He studied English literature and classics at Memorial University. He joined CBC News Online in 2004.

Kim Guttormson is the online journalist for Alberta. A graduate of Ryerson, she worked as a newspaper reporter for a decade before joining CBC Online. She won a National Newspaper Award with the Winnipeg Free Press for coverage of the 1997 Manitoba flood.

Peter Hadzipetros is the producer of our in-depth section. He's had various responsibilities at CBC.ca over the years, from running the Consumers zone to working on provincial election sites. Before joining us in 1997, Peter worked for CBC Radio for 15 years.

Gary Katz, editor and columnist, is a graduate lawyer from Winnipeg. He has worked on many CBC Radio programs as a story editor, director and producer. Among them: This Country in the Morning, Gzowski on FM, Quirks and Quarks, Stereo Morning, Morningside, Fresh Air, Sunday Morning and Tapestry. He has written both fiction and non-fiction and his poetry has appeared in Quarry magazine and Barbed Lyres.

Cheryl Krawchuk, news writer, came to us from the online desk of Toronto's CityTV. Before that, she worked for three years at a Toronto-based web development company. Cheryl has a bachelor of arts degree and a diploma in journalism.

Tracey Madigan moved to the web after more than 15 years as a television and radio journalist. She worked in Manitoba and Ontario before joining CBC-TV in Montreal in 1997 as a reporter and anchor. Tracey has been at montreal.cbc.ca since its launch in 1999.

Peter McCluskey, news writer, is a CBC News veteran who has been with CBC.ca since 1998. Before that he was most recently CBC Radio's Senior Producer for British Columbia. Peter has also worked at Newsworld International and The National in senior positions.

John McHutchion writes business stories and features for CBC News Online. Before joining CBC in early 2001, John was a business/financial reporter at Canoe.ca and the Toronto Star. He also worked at the Yukon News and the Whitehorse Star.

Andrew Meeson, copy editor, has master's degrees in Russian history and journalism from the University of Western Ontario, and has passed the Canadian Securities Course. He has been a reporter and editor at various publications, including the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, TV Guide and the Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal, as well as a partner in a communications company.

Paddy Moore helped launch ottawa.cbc.ca five years ago. Paddy began his CBC career at Morningside with Peter Gzowski. He also worked for This Morning, As It Happens, Quirks and Quarks and Outfront.

Deborah Nobes, the online journalist for CBC New Brunswick, is an award-winning reporter who has worked in print, radio and television. She spent two years producing Canada Now and is the program's backup host.

Kevin O'Connor is the online journalist for CBC Saskatchewan. A Regina resident, he joined CBC in 2004 after a 17-year career in newspapers. He has also reported for Time.

Robin Rowland is our photo editor and also the web producer for The National. He was one of the first four News Online staff when Newsworld Online was launched in 1996. Before that he was a lineup editor and writer for Newsworld. He has also worked for CBC Radio News, CTV News and is the author of four books. His fifth, The Sonkrai Tribunal, will be published in the fall of 2005. Robin has an interdiscipilinary MA in history and law from York University, a BJ from Carleton and BA in anthropology from York.

Jackie Ruryk, copy editor and news writer, has been a journalist for more than 20 years. Before joining CBC News Online in 2000, she worked for United Press Canada and Broadcast News, as well as community newspapers in Ontario.

Carolyn Ryan produced the morning show at CBC Radio in Saint John for two years before joining CBC News Online as a news writer in 2003. A graduate of both UPEI and Carleton University's School of Journalism, she has worked as an editor at newspapers in Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island.

Wendy Sawatzky, the online journalist for Manitoba, is a graduate of the University of Winnipeg and the University of King's College. She has worked as a radio reporter, copy editor, freelance writer, webmaster and graphic designer.

Adam Shalaby worked as a freelance videographer and editor before joining CBC News Online in 2000. He's a technical leader in the encoding area and also works on special projects for us.

Blair Shewchuk, news writer and columnist, began his career reporting for Southam papers in Ontario and Alberta more than 20 years ago. He joined the CBC in 1989, and has worked as a reporter, editor and producer in both radio and television. Blair moved to CBC.ca in 1999. He chairs the Online Language Advisory Board, which sets style guidelines for our website, and works as a trainer in the Learning and Development Department. He has a degree in journalism and a master's in economics.

Duncan Speight has been the Vancouver online journalist since 1999. He has also been a lineup editor and assignment editor at CBC-TV News in Vancouver. Prior to that, he worked for private TV and radio newsrooms across B.C. and taught journalism at BCIT.

Tessa Sproule is the consumer affairs writer for CBC News Online and the web producer for CBC-TV’s Marketplace. Since joining the CBC in 1994, she has also worked as a reporter, producer and writer in both radio and television. Tessa has a journalism degree from Ryerson, is a graduate of the Canadian Film Centre and is currently completing her master's in communication and culture.

Bob Sudeyko oversees our Viewpoint section. He's been in broadcasting for 25 years. He's worked on air in both radio and television, most recently with CBC Newsworld in Halifax.

Terra Tailleur is the online journalist for CBC Nova Scotia. For five years she travelled the country as a radio reporter. Before joining CBC, she worked at several newspapers in Alberta as a reporter and proofreader.

Scott Utting , news writer, came to CBC.ca in 2000. Before joining us, he worked as a newspaper reporter and editor. He has master's degrees in English literature from the University of British Columbia and in journalism from the University of Western Ontario.

Robert Vajda designed CBC News Online. He was also instrumental in the development and design of Newsworld Online. Robert maintains and redesigns our main pages and backgrounders, and creates graphics.
