Career Background: Upon graduating, he went to work as a farm herdsman. For many years, he worked as a cattle buyer at Toronto Stockyards. During this time, he started a band as well as the Brougham County Jamboree on his farm.
Community Activities: He founded Herizon House, a shelter for women and children, and was a founding member of the Brougham Youth and Family Action Centre. Also volunteered with the Ajax-Pickering Hospital, United Way, Easter Seals, Big Brothers and Sisters of Canada, the Cancer Society, the Kidney Foundation, the Canadian Cleft Lip and Palate Family Association and is involved with local sports teams. He also chaired the Cassidy Golf Tournament for Community Living and the Ontario Athlete of the Year Syl Apps Award Selection Committee. He helped raise over $10 million for Children's Charities and received the Durham Region Man Of Distinction Award, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, and the Economic Development Council of Ontario President's Award. He is also the first honorary Big Brother for Ajax-Pickering.

Municipal: First elected in 1988 as a councillor of Ward 3 of Pickering. Re-elected in 1991, 1994, 1997, 2000 and 2006 in Pickering and Durham.
