This riding in the "Golden Horseshoe" in southern Ontario was redrawn and renamed in 2004.

It is a mix of urban and rural communities, including Ancaster, Dundas and Flamborough, part of the new amalgamated city of Hamilton. It stretches from Garner Road, the transmission lines and Highway 403 in the east to Milburough town line in the north, Gore Road in the west and Sawmill Road in the south.

Primary employment areas include the service sector, manufacturing and retail trade. The riding is also home to McMaster University and the university's medical centre, both important to the region's economy. Average family income is $114,491, near the top of the range for Ontario, and unemployment is a low 4.7 per cent.The 2006 census shows that less than 20 per cent of the residents are immigrants, more than half from Europe and about a quarter from Asia and the Middle East.

In 1996, the riding of Wentworth-Burlington was created and in 2000, it was renamed Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Aldershot. In the 2004 redistribution, Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale riding lost part of the city of Burlington, but took in part of what was formerly Hamilton West.

Population: 111,844 (2006 census; an increase of 5.3% since 2001)

Political History

Conservative David Sweet came back from his 2004 election loss to Liberal Russ Powers and defeated Powers in the 2006 election by 2,874 votes. In the previous election, Powers beat Sweet in the Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale riding by 2,800 votes.

The Progressive Conservatives held the former Hamilton-Wentworth riding with MP Sean O'Sullivan from 1972-78 and Geoff Scott from 1978-93.

John Bryden won in this area, under three different riding names, for the Liberals in 1993, 1997 and 2000. After it appeared he could lose the Liberal nomination in 2004, he crossed the floor of the Commons to join the Conservatives, but he lost his bid to run for that party's 2004 nomination in Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale.
