Career Background: From 1977 to 1987 was Crown counsel to the department of the attorney general, as well as counsel to the Deparment of Labour and Employment Services and the Manitoba Labour Board, was the director of Workplace Safety and Health and the director of Child Welfare. From 1987 to 1991 was director of the constitutional law branch for the Department of Justice. In 1991, was the associate counsel for the Great West Life Assurance Company. After being defeated in the 1999 Manitoba election, returned to Great West Life as their senior counsel. From 1988 to 1995 was a lecturer on labour law and employment law at the University of Manitoba, and was also a member of the Manitoba Bar Association task force on gender equality in the legal profession.
Community Activities: Served as president and vice-president of the community school association for Lord Wolseley School and as a member of the board of directors of YM-YWCA.

Federal: Elected in Provencher in 2000, 2004 and 2006.
Political History
Cabinet: Federally, was appointed minister of justice and attorney general of Canada in 2006. In 2007, was appointed president of the Treasury Board. Provincially, in May 1995, was the minister of labour and the minister charged with administration of the Civil Service Act, Civil Service Superannuation Act, Civil Service Supplementary Severance Benefit Act, Public Servants Act and the Workers' Compensation Act. In January 1997, was the provincial minister of justice and attorney general, keeper of the Great Seal and the minister responsible for constitutional affairs.
Committee: Former member: Justice and Human Rights; subcommittee on National Security of Justice and Human Rights; Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. Member: subcommittee on the process for appointment to the Federal Judiciary of the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.
Caucus: Former Canadian Alliance justice critic. Became Conservative party justice critic in January 2004.
