It sounds like an "odd couple" joke gone terribly wrong: Mike, a young neo-Nazi skinhead (Matthew TenBruggencate) is accused of a savage murder. Danny, the lawyer assigned to defend him (Graham Ashmore) is Jewish.
That's the premise behind David Gow's Cherry Docs, and as you might expect, this production from Winnipeg Jewish Theatre is challenging for artists and audience alike.
Why does Danny take the case?
Lenny Breau's life story is a tragic one on many fronts - a difficult relationship with his father, a criminal underappreciation of his talent, eventual drug addiction, and his death, which remains an unsolved mystery to this day. 5 O'Clock Bells doesn't shy away from that tragedy, so it's heavy material to digest - especially for those who are new to the Breau story.

We're kicking it off during quite a busy theatre week here in the 'Peg... Manitoba Theatre Centre is opening its season tonight with 5 O'Clock Bells, a play about Winnipeg's own Lenny Breau.
And because one opening in a week is never enough, Winnipeg Jewish Theatre is kicking off its season with Cherry Docs (coincidentally enough, a play which was last produced here at the MTC Warehouse about a decade ago).
