Instant messaging (IM) - Text communication between two or more people through a computer network that is more immediate than e-mail. If e-mail is like sending letters back and forth, IM is more like a telephone conversation. The messages that one person types instantly appear on the other person's computer screen, one line at a time. IM also allows people to see if their friends are online and using their computers. More recent IM software allows people to see and hear each other over their computers, as well, and to play games.
