operating system

Operating system (OS) - The software responsible for managing a computer's hardware (memory, disk drives, monitor) and for allowing a person to control the computer. Popular operating systems include the Microsoft Windows family, Mac OS and Unix-based systems, such as Linux. Of these, Windows is the most vulnerable to malicious software; it's the most common OS, making it the easiest target, and some versions contain security vulnerabilities. Microsoft has released a number of patches to fix the vulnerabilities, but not all Windows computers have the patches installed.
