Cuts: 500 jobs cut from public service
CBC News Online | April 7, 2005

Mitch Murphy said the province can no longer sustain its spending, and needs to make changes.

The biggest single cut is the provincial workforce. It will drop by 500 people as part of the government's so-called renewal process.

There will be fewer teachers in the province, as the government trims away jobs, but pledges to keep the student-teacher ratio in tact.

Two visitor information centres and two provincial campgrounds will be closed. Another couple of day parks will also be shut.

Other cuts
  • Dental Health Program cut by $250,000
  • Human Rights Commission cut by $75,000
  • Fur advance program eliminated
  • Confederation Centre grant cut by 5%
  • Culture and heritage grants reduced by 6%
  • Sport and recreation grants cut by 5%
  • Georgetown Youth Centre closed

Campgrounds at Campbell's Cove and Strathgartney are closed, and the day use parks at Fishermen's Haven and Victoria will also cease operation.

Visitor Information Centres in Brackley Beach and Poole's Corner are being shut. And the provincial government will move its Summerside tourist centre to a location on the city's waterfront.

Some building and renovation projects are also on hold for a year. These include the project to renovate the Montague Family Health Centre, and a program that helps seniors pay for repairs on their homes.
