Oscars on TV 101

The Academy Awards is considered to be the grand-daddy of all awards shows.

But for more than twenty years it's been wrestling with its identity - it's been accused of being out of touch, too "Hollywood", too white and too male.

And in recent years the ratings for the Oscars telecast have been up and down as the show's producers struggled to attract a younger audience.

And yet, millions of us still join Oscars pools and tune in to see the biggest Hollywood stars clutching those golden statues for their 45 seconds of thank you's.

So Mary invited Fresh Air's arts and entertainment columnist Karen Gordon to tackle the question: How do you solve a problem like the Oscars?
