file extension

firewall

File extension - The suffix on a file name, usually three letters long on Windows systems, that indicates what type of file it is. Examples include .txt for a text file and .jpg for a photograph. Malicious software is often carried in files that are executed by the computer, with extensions such as .exe, .vbs or .pif. Some computers running Windows 95 or later hide the file extensions from the user, and someone trying to spread a virus as an e-mail attachment may give the file a name like I_LOVE_YOU.TXT.vbs, knowing that some computers will only show the harmless-looking I_LOVE_YOU.TXT.
