Firewall - A system that controls communications on a computer network, acting as a filter between a computer or small network of computers, and a larger network, such as the internet. In a network, a firewall could be a dedicated computer placed between the internal network and the internet. On a home computer, a personal firewall is usually a piece of software controlling network communication and configured to protect the computer from outside intrusion and the effects of malicious software.
