The Asian qualifiers - final round

The Asian qualifying zone (AFC) for the 2010 World Cup sees 20 countries split into five round-robin groups, with each team playing each other home and away.

The top two teams in each group advance to the final round, where they will be divided into two round-robin groups. The top two teams each of the final two groups automatically qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

The two third-place teams, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, will face off in a two-game playoff (home and away). The winner of the playoff then meets the winner of the Oceania qualifying zone (OFC) in a two-game playoff (home and away) with the winner earning a berth at the 2010 World Cup.

On Sept. 5, 2009, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain battled to a 0-0 draw in the opener of their two-game playoff seeries. Four days later, the two teams battled to a 2-2 draw in Saudia Arabia, which means Bahrain won the series on the away goals rule.
