Phishing - A form of fraud in which someone attempts to acquire confidential information, such as passwords or credit card numbers, by posing as someone trustworthy. Phishing usually happens like this: Someone sends an e-mail posing as a representative of a bank or online service, sometimes using e-mail spoofing to fool the recipient. The e-mail either solicits private information directly, or invites the user to visit a website to provide the information. The website will often appear exactly like the company's website, but it has been set up to steal the information for illegal use. Even the address of the site could appear legitimate, using URL spoofing. The ruse could even go so far as to send the user to the company's actual website once the information has been taken.
