Phreaking - The act of making a telephone system do something it wasn't intended to do, essentially cracking a phone network. In the 1960s, phreaking frequently involved using electronic devices, or even toy whistles, to replicate the control tones used over telephone networks. Phreaks could convince electronic telephone switchers that they had deposited coins, or that they had hung up while keeping the telephone circuit open, allowing them to make free long distance calls. Modern digital telephone systems use separate lines for control signals and voice signals, so phreaking is not as common as it once was.
