I think we all learned from that.”
- Hockey Kovalchuk contenders weigh offers Underwhelmed by the offers he's received so far, Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell attempted to ignite one last rush of interest in UFA-to-be Ilya Kovalchuk on Wednesday afternoon. Several sources believe the move was intended to pressure the Los Angeles Kings and maybe the Philadelphia Flyers into sweetening their offers. However, those two teams - and several others who expressed interest - are below Waddell's asking price, reluctant to pay premium prices for a rental. (Waddell has refused to allow any team the right to negotiate beforehand with the captain's agent, Jay Grossman.)

Tuesday morning, the judges held their noses and approved a $97 million US development known as CityNorth, but ruled that future deals involving tax dollars will face much stricter rules and tighter scrutiny.
- Hockey QMJHL, Devils did right thing with Cormier Let's get this out of the way first. The QMJHL got it 100 per cent right with Patrice Cormier. And the New Jersey Devils got it 100 per cent right in not asking the AHL to make him eligible at some point this season.
- Hockey Time for Canadiens to consider trading Price Last week, one of my 30 thoughts concerned the Montreal goaltending battle. I asked a scout about Jaroslav Halak and Carey Price. He said that if Halak was made available, 10 teams would be interested. If Price was made available, everyone makes a pitch. Halak’s agent, Allan Walsh, questioned that. So, minutes after Price gave up an ugly OT winner to Andy McDonald last Wednesday night (a game I attended), I asked another scout for his take. After thinking about it for a few seconds, he grimaced and said, “I’d take Price.”
- Hockey Storm clouds forming in Tampa Bay Wanted to write a little more about the Lightning, because we had to ram it in tight at the end of Hotstove. Quick Tampa Bay primer: When they won the Stanley Cup in 2004, the Lightning were owned by Bill Davidson – who also owned the Detroit Pistons and the Palace of Auburn Hills. Davidson did the NHL a huge favour in stabilizing that team, but his true passion was basketball. In August 2007, he sold the Lightning to a group led by Oren Koules and Len Barrie. To make a long story short, Davidson financed that deal. If, for any reason, those two could not sustain ownership, the franchise would revert back to him.
- Hockey Should the NHL consider microphones on referees? Best job in the country last week? Unquestionably, it had to be a Vancouver sports radio host. Stephane Auger and Alain Vigneault (who was accused of putting Darcy Hordichuk and Alex Bolduc out to fight in a Jan. 13 game against Minnesota) were acquitted in separate incidents by the NHL, because there wasn’t enough evidence to convict. There was no trouble filling airtime. For all the talk, however, there are still a lot of unanswered questions. For me, the biggest: How can the NHL make sure this doesn’t happen again?

From an organizational standpoint, the NHL has learned a lot since this started six years ago in Edmonton. The league has perfected what the Oilers created. The teams playing in it like it, the fans attending love it, and the game makes a fortune. The event’s official logo should be a cash register, because it’s a licence to print money.

There were obvious decisions (Brodeur, Luongo, Fleury), and bold selections (Drew Doughty as seventh defenceman). He rewarded hot starters (Patrice Bergeron, Patrick Marleau), and showed faith in struggling ones (Eric Staal, Scott Niedermayer as captain). With little practice time, he bet on familiarity (Keith/Seabrook, Getzlaf/Perry and the Sharks line), while wagering that some natural centres will thrive on the wing. Most interesting: he overlooked previous Olympians playing well (Martin St. Louis, Brad Richards, Ryan Smyth, Shane Doan) in favour of extremely talented new blood (Corey Perry, Jonathan Toews, Mike Richards, Bergeron). On paper, this is a really good team, and I don't really disagree with any of the selections.
- Hockey Caps, Jackets trade, Team Canada picks and 30 thoughts 30 Thoughts was delayed as we waited for news of the Columbus/Washington deal. I had an item in there praising Scott Howson for not making a panic move even though his fan base wanted heads on a stick. Good GMs don’t give up key players/draft picks or mortgage salary cap future in tough times. Then, he goes out and makes a trade.

(So what if the decade technically doesn't end until Dec. 31, 2010?) Here are my favourite moments of the past 10 years: 1. Men's hockey gold medal final, Salt Lake City Olympics.What an unbelievably tense atmosphere between two teams starved for an Olympic championship. Like many of you reading this, I'm a huge sports fan. But, if you want to do a good job, you've got to detach yourself from any rooting interest. This is the only time I came anywhere close to violating that rule. When Jarome Iginla scored to make it 4-2, I almost jumped out of my seat – I literally had to catch myself. No one sporting event I've attended before or since had that emotional edge.

The first one I ever covered was in 1999 - spent a week at Blue Jays camp in Dunedin as the players reported, then drove across-state to Jupiter, a beautiful facility the Expos shared with the Cardinals. One of the features I did was on Carl Pavano and Tony Armas, Jr. They were the pitchers Montreal acquired for Pedro Martinez.

"Why I have listen somebody to say I have to change (my) game (like) somebody going to kill me?" Ovechkin said. "Nobody can kill me. Just play my game, enjoy the time and enjoy my life. It's me and it is what it is."” That’s not good if you’re a Capitals player who wants to win the Stanley Cup. It’s not good if you’re Bruce Boudreau, George McPhee or Ted Leonsis. It’s not good if you’re a Capitals fan. Quite simply, Washington will not win the sport’s most coveted trophy unless Ovechkin understands he must change – a little.

- Hockey NHL will take care of Gretzky Wayne Gretzky will not prevent the NHL from purchasing the Phoenix Coyotes, and the league wants him to know that it will do everything possible to repair their damaged relationship. Gretzky had until Friday to file a motion challenging Jerry Moyes's agreement to sell the team back to the league. Defeated in his attempt to flip Phoenix to Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie, Moyes wanted to get out as quickly as possible now that the team must cut $2.6 million US worth of payroll cheques every two weeks. It is possible the NHL will take control on Monday.

As I wrote this Sunday night, there was no way of knowing if there would be any supplementary discipline for Scuderi. On Monday, Colin Campbell told HNIC Radio he had fined him. The other six players were suspended a combined six games. (Three each for Ruutu and Artyukhin.)
- Hockey Kovalchuk may be next $100M man Before we get to the meat of today’s blog, I want to make sure all hockey fans are familiar with David Falk. Basketball fans surely recognize the name. He is Michael Jordan’s long-time agent, and the brains behind several groundbreaking NBA contracts. Last spring, Falk released an autobiography entitled The Bald Truth (Let’s just say he is follically challenged.) There are many interesting anecdotes about his negotiations, two of which are relevant here.
- Hockey Bettman wants to 'make up' with Gretzky Wayne Gretzky remains in radio silence, but both the NHL and the Canadian Olympic Team are making attempts to reach him. Commissioner Gary Bettman emailed Gretzky last Thursday, hoping for the opportunity to meet with him face-to-face. According to NHL sources, the Great One said he is “not yet ready”, preferring to lay low, as he has done since stepping down as Coyotes head coach.
- Hockey Chelios's plan would re-shape NHLPA No games in the NHL on Sunday, but one very important phone call. At 5 pm ET, that conversation will determine the NHLPA's future. According to several sources, Chris Chelios has a plan. The future Hall of Famer wants change and will propose an enormous one. Over the past few weeks, he has been reaching out to several highly respected former players, asking them to join a kind of "leadership council" that will run the union until a new executive director is found. It’s why Chelios has yet to report to the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves – he's been working on this.

Six weeks before the announcement, Maloney began the process of replacing the most famous man in hockey. For such an earth-shattering event to remain secret for so long in these gossip-crazy times – well, it’s amazing.
- Hockey Toskala learning all over again I was going to write about Vesa Toskala earlier in the week, but got tied up with Andrew Ference. Really didn’t see the need to re-visit the Toronto situation until I talked to a goalie familiar with the two principals – Toskala and consultant Francois Allaire. There is a theory going around that one of the reasons for Toskala’s poor start is he’s having trouble adjusting to Allaire’s different style.
- Hockey Ference candid about shedding role as player rep Andrew Ference is going to concentrate on being a Boston Bruins defenceman, not an NHLPA executive board member. Ference stepped down as Boston's player rep on Tuesday, with Mark Stuart expected to replace him. Stuart acted as Ference's "second" the past two seasons.
- Hockey Time for Kostitsyn to look in the mirror; plus, 30 random thoughts Each week, Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman brings you his take on the world of sports. Click, peruse, debate, comment. Sometime today, Sergei Kostitsyn is scheduled to have a conversation with his agent, Don Meehan. The two men haven’t spoken since the start of the NHL season, a season that began with Kostitsyn in the witness protection program. Last Thursday, as his former teammates beat Toronto 4-3 in overtime, the forward gave an interview to Washington-based Russian reporter Dmitry Chesnokov. (It can be found here ). In it, Kostitsyn blamed everyone and anything but himself for the demotion to Hamilton that made him go AWOL. Young man, it’s time to look in the mirror.
- Hockey Conflict of interest taints NHLPA investigation The battle between Paul Kelly and the NHLPA just got even uglier. The Toronto Star reported Wednesday that the union hired former Ontario Chief Justice Roy McMurtry to investigate whether or not it was correct to fire Kelly for looking at confidential documents. According to the newspaper, McMurtry found that Kelly committed "a serious breach of trust" and that there was "legal cause to terminate him." But the NHLPA should never have hired McMurtry to investigate Kelly. And McMurtry should never have accepted. He is a close friend of disgraced former executive director Alan Eagleson.
- Hockey Winners and losers in Coyotes case A quick rundown of winners and losers now that the Coyotes future is decided – for a few months anyway. Winner: Gary Bettman. In the courtroom, Bettman gets almost everything he wants. Technically, the NHL did not win the case. But more importantly to the commissioner, it did not lose to Jim Balsillie. There is now legal precedent that the league controls its franchises. You want a team, you've got to go through him.

NO MORE EASY NIGHTS... ST. LOUIS Why I'm right: It's easy to go from outhouse to (nearer) the penthouse, which is what both St. Louis and Columbus did last season. What's harder is finding the consistency to stay there, especially in a tough division. Will all of the players who took strides stay at that level? What's unusual about the Blues rise is that it occurred despite serious injuries to important people. Paul Kariya played 15 games, Eric Brewer 28 and Andy McDonald 46. Erik Johnson never played at all. Brewer will be late to start the season, but will plugging all of them back into the lineup ruin the chemistry? Johnson's injury prevents him from fulfilling his enormous potential.

No final decisions were made - although one player said to me that at no time did anyone ask about re-instating Kelly as executive director. It's unlikely then that would happen. There is another conference call scheduled for Sunday. That's the big one because the final decision on how to proceed with Kelly's termination will be made during that time. Paul Maurice pointed out that it will be very difficult to dethrone the Penguins without size and power down the middle. How many Eastern teams legitimately have that?

- Hockey The Kessel gamble Two moments that stand out, now that Brian Burke has traded for Phil Kessel: The week that the Maple Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs last season, Jim Hughson, Craig Simpson and I were watching a game-day skate. Burke walked by and said, “Can’t believe we’re out of the playoffs.” I looked at him and said, “Honestly, you can’t be surprised" That set him off. Burke was furious that such failures were expected, even accepted. He stormed away angry about that.
- Hockey Kessel Bowl chock full of pre-season intrigue Toronto/Boston at the Air Canada Centre Wednesday night - the Kessel Bowl. Even though he won't be playing, he will be the focus, especially with both Brian Burke and Peter Chiarelli in the building. (Interestingly, Wade Arnott, Kessel's agent, said he probably won't attend because of all the hype. Otherwise, he declined comment for this blog.)
- Hockey Western Conference notes And let's not forget about the West ... I can’t help but feel for the Coyotes, who will play in front of fewer fans than a Canadian university field hockey team. (What happens first: Phoenix ownership settled or Toronto wins its next Stanley Cup?) Imagine you’re Shane Doan. You’re the face of the franchise – having signed a five-year deal, staying in Arizona because your family loves it there. As a player, you understand that certain things are beyond your control, but this violates the U.S. Constitution’s Eighth Amendment against “cruel and unusual punishment.”

- Hockey Draft picks for star player doesn't always pan out It was the suggestion of Hockey Night in Canada producer Doug Walton that I do a Peter King-style notebook every week, so with apologies to Mr. King (hope he remembers that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery), here is my first attempt/ripoff. If you guys like it, I’ll keep it up. (It's three parts, so please click through). After hearing that Toronto’s offer for Phil Kessel reportedly includes two first-round picks, I wondered how often a team had traded such significant bounty. Admittedly, this research is unscientific, since it required looking through transactions on my own, and I may have missed something. But here’s what I found over the last 20 years:
- Hockey Senators avoid distraction by dealing Heatley Clearly, Bryan Murray felt like he had no choice. That's the reaction across the NHL this afternoon, as the Senators dealt former 50-goal man Dany Heatley to San Jose for Milan Michalek, Jonathan Cheechoo and a second-round pick. (The other reaction: Boy, the Sharks are loaded offensively.)
- Hockey Without proper pieces, a Kessel experiment would fail Here is the deal on Phil Kessel: An incredible talent. But an exasperating one. He's a walking contradiction. An almost total non-talker in public, but phenomenal when it comes to charity efforts in private. A guy who beat testicular cancer, but wouldn't play through last season's shoulder injury until teammates pointed out they were playing through worse.
- Hockey Is it time for Red Wings to shadow Malkin, not Crosby? In the aftermath of Game 4, there is a near-universal reaction across the NHL: “I’ve never seen the Red Wings like that.” Even when pushed to the edge by Anaheim two rounds ago, the Wings never lost their incredible sense of focus and calm. Whether battling a controversial disallowed goal or the merciless Ducks’ punishment, Detroit’s players never lost the professionalism that sets them apart from everyone else.
- Hockey Tracking Toronto-Tampa trade talk Okay, Toronto/Tampa and the No. 2 pick. To be honest, I was surprised at the attention my Fan 590 comments received, simply because Pierre LeBrun reported a similar scenario two weeks ago on The Hotstove, and Damien Cox went even more in-depth in the Toronto Star. Anyway, this rumour is all over the place.
- Hockey Retire the Ovechkin vs. Crosby debate There are nights you never forget when you cover sports. This was one of them. I’ve been very, very lucky in my life to witness some very special moments: The 2002 Olympic men's hockey gold-medal game, the only sporting event where I almost cheered in public. Usain Bolt. Michael Phelps. The unbelievable 2001 World Series, featuring President Bush throwing out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium six weeks after the 9/11 attacks. (Regardless of what you think of him now, that was a powerful moment.) The 2001 NBA playoff series between the Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers.
- Hockey Canadiens' situation far from a lost cause It’s some of the best advice I’ve ever received: Never make important decisions in overly emotional moments. Right now, everyone in the Montreal organization should listen. Take a step back, really think things through, and don’t make any major decisions in the immediate aftermath of the 100th anniversary letdown.
- Hockey Gainey in "Cone of Silence" mode Just wanted to give everyone a little insight into the atmosphere around the Bell Centre today: Bob Gainey is going into "Cone of Silence" mode.
- Hockey Habs’ season rests with the 20 guys in uniform It’s a strange time here. For the last two seasons, you could feel the energy in downtown Montreal. You could feel the pride. It didn’t even have to be the day of a game. It’s why, right now, the Bell Centre is the best home atmosphere in the NHL. Today is different.
- Hockey Gainey could be gone at end of playoffs It's been 36 years since the legendary Sam Pollock fielded "Bob Who?" questions after the 1973 NHL draft, trading down twice and taking an unknown guy named Gainey with the eighth overall pick.
- Hockey Crosby changing for the better Quietly, very quietly, something significant is happening in Pittsburgh. It's not getting as much league-wide attention as Bylsma's March of the Penguins or Evgeni Malkin's charge towards the Hart. It's the change in Sidney Crosby. Crosby 2.0 is coming. It's about time. And it's going to make him an even better player.
- Hockey Is Steve Mason the next Marty Brodeur? On Saturday night's Hockey Night in Canada pre-game show, you saw the past (Patrick Roy) and the present (Martin Brodeur) of goaltending excellence. It’s hard to predict the future — Carey Price is proof you shouldn’t anoint the Next One too quickly — but it’s hard not to be impressed with Blue Jackets rookie Steve Mason. And since there is so much we couldn't fit into our Inside Hockey feature on him, here, as the late Paul Harvey would say, is the rest of the story.
- Hockey Carbonneau a bad fit with current Canadiens My first real "beat" in the sports media business was reporting on the Raptors for The Fan 590, a Toronto all-sports radio station. That was 1995-96, and it was an incredible learning experience. One of the lessons came from head coach Brendan Malone. He explained that "the most important guys on your roster are the best four players and the four who play the fewest. If they buy into what you are doing, the middle group falls in line. If not, you're in trouble." Malone knew what he was talking about. Despite a surprisingly competitive inaugural season, the players couldn't stand him and openly cheered his firing – something I've never seen since.
- Hockey Gainey's silence spoke volumes at deadline Without making a single move on Trade Deadline Wednesday, Bob Gainey proved why he is the right man to run the Montreal Canadiens. The best coaches, the best general managers, the best players – they simply don't bow to the pressures of their fans. They appreciate the support and are thankful for the passion. But as Bob Knight once said, "If you start listening to the fans, pretty soon you'll end up sitting next to them." In Quebec, they were howling for Olli Jokinen. They were screaming for Jay Bouwmeester. But neither player made sense for the Canadiens and Gainey knew it. He knows the truth. His team is not good enough to win.
- Hockey New life for Gerber with Maple Leafs? It seemed unfathomable a few weeks ago, but Martin Gerber may have new life in the NHL. There is interest in the waiver-available goaltender, and it comes courtesy of the Toronto Maple Leafs. There could be a couple of reasons for this. Obviously, one is that Vesa Toskala - who is starting Tuesday night against the Devils - gets traded. The other is that Toskala is hurting, with hip and groin problems. Toskala was the backup to Curtis Joseph in Saturday's 4-3 win in Ottawa, but was noticeably uncomfortable as he stretched during the intermissions. (Due to the small visitor's room at Scotiabank Place, he did it out in the public hallway.) He still has one more year at $4 million on his Toronto contract. If the Maple Leafs decided Toskala needs to be shut down, Gerber - an unrestricted free agent-to-be - could fill in the blanks with Joseph and Justin Pogge.
- Hockey These GMs have a lot to mull over before D-day Brian Burke gets the most attention, being the guy who loves the spotlight and sits in the Centre of the Hockey Media Universe. And he does have some interesting pieces to trade, especially if he gets a great offer for Tomas Kaberle. But, there are four other NHL general managers who will also determine how memorable this particular deadline really is to be.
- Hockey Gainey picking on Kovalev for a reason A few notes about an eventful day in Montreal. If Bob Gainey really wanted to trade Alex Kovalev right now, the Russian winger wouldn't be "resting." He'd be packing. Sunday’s loss in Vancouver wasn't necessarily No. 27’s final game in a Canadiens uniform. Unless he shows up on the upcoming off-day Friday dragging the Stanley Cup behind his car – a la George Costanza with the World Series Trophy in Seinfeld – Kovalev will play for this team again.
- Hockey A little advice for struggling Price It was the NHL lockout, and the co-owner of the WHL’s Tri-City Americans needed somewhere to practice. So, he went back to Washington, and met the team’s goalie. His name was Carey Price. “I remember thinking, ‘When I was 18, I was nowhere near as polished as this guy,’” Olaf Kolzig said Friday. “I knew right there how good he was going to be. Goalies don’t mature until their mid-20s. To see where he was then ... you could see how special he was going to be at 25.” We’re coming up on the one year anniversary of Cristobal Huet’s trade from Montreal, the day Bob Gainey made Price his number one man. Ron Tugnutt remembers watching as Price led the Canadiens to a stunning regular-season Eastern Conference crown. “I said, ‘This is the guy who will lead Team Canada for years.’ His footwork is incredible.”
- Hockey Who could be next on Detroit's "lock up" list? Try Lidstrom Considering my recent history with Red Wing fans, allow me to begin this blog with the following disclaimer: I have not spoken to anyone in the Detroit organization about this. It is purely guesswork on my part. Now, let’s go to the thesis: Ken Holland’s next big negotiation will not be Marian Hossa, Johan Franzen, Jiri Hudler or Mikael Samuelsson. It will be Nicklas Lidstrom. (This, of course, is assuming Holland already doesn’t know Lidstrom’s future plans.)
- Hockey Wings do it again with Zetterberg deal During the Red Wings' run to the 2008 Stanley Cup championship, general manager Ken Holland was asked how he convinces players to take less than market value to be in Detroit. "We try to give them the best of everything," Holland said. "We have a private plane, making travel as easy as possible. We have a passionate fan base, but one that allows our players to have their privacy. And we promise them that the money we save on their individual contracts will be used to get other great players to come here." "We don't want to win a Cup. We want to win Cups.'"
- Hockey OHL ruling will affect NHL in long run It's undoubtedly the most passionate debate in hockey. Whether or not fighting still has a place. But what if its future at the professional level is not determined by the NHL? Last March, Colin Campbell asked, "It’s probably time that the general managers ask the question, 'Where are we at with this?'" Obviously, the major topic of conversation was his 11-year megadeal, paying him a little less than the Gross National Product of a small African nation. And, how signing that deal broke the heart of Canadiens’ fans everywhere. “I’m happy I signed for 11 years,” Lecavalier said at the time. “I’ve been with Tampa for 10 years and I consider it my home. Obviously, I’m from Montreal - I love Montreal - but when you live somewhere for 10 years …” Well, you get the idea.
