Modem - A device to convert digital computer signals from one form to another, especially one used to connect to an external network. A conventional dial-up modem is needed to connect to a dial-up network, but not to connect to a broadband or a wireless network. Broadband connections use a DSL modem or cable modem, but they don't dial a telephone number. A wireless adapter is sometimes called a wireless modem. See also Dialer.
